The following table shows how much incoming generating net assets (not counting your own home)   a couple needs to accumulate to support their 30 years retirement lives assuming they need $63,500 (after tax)   for living at their 1st year of retirement.     Assumptions used in this example   are conservative   :

  • asset allocation (cash/fixed income   30%,   shares 35%,   properties/property trusts   35%)
  • asset return rates (average capital growth rates p.a.   for assets   except cash and fixed income   : 3.2%   and average   income return   p.a. :3.1%)
  • average tax rate   (20%)
  • annual inflation rate ( 2.5%)
  • amount of inheritance they wish to leave to their descendants (Nil, apart from their own home)
